We are a diverse and collaborative team of independent researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and highly motivated graduate students dedicated to advancing the understanding of geomaterials through experimental, computational, and theoretical research. Our work spans a broad range of topics in geomechanics, granular materials, soil behavior, and related disciplines, with an emphasis on addressing both fundamental scientific questions and practical engineering challenges.
Students and Postdoctoral Researchers: We are always looking for talented, curious, and enthusiastic individuals who are eager to pursue challenging and impactful research. Applications from prospective graduate students and postdoctoral researchers are warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining our group, please contact Prof. Dr. Mamoru Kikumoto to discuss potential research opportunities and available positions.
Collaborations: We actively collaborate with researchers, academic institutions, and industry partners. If your research interests align with our expertise - or if you have an exciting idea that could lead to new scientific directions - we would be delighted to explore opportunities for collaboration. We value interdisciplinary research and welcome partnerships that broaden our perspectives and create meaningful impact.
Studying in Japan: For prospective international students and researchers, general information about studying and living in Japan, including admissions procedures, scholarships, and practical guidance, can be found in the guidebook.
Thank you for your interest in joining our research group at Kyoto University. To ensure a smooth and fair application process, all international applicants who have graduated (or expect to graduate) from a university outside of Japan are required to go through the official AAO (Admissions Assistance Office) system. Please read the guidelines below carefully before contacting the professor.
STEP 1: Apply to the AAO (Admissions Assistance Office)
Before contacting the professor directly, you must submit your application documents through the AAO online system. This is the official gateway for international students applying to our graduate programs.
Who needs to apply? Graduates (or prospective graduates) of universities outside of Japan.
What is the purpose? The AAO checks your academic background, verifies your certificates, and confirms that all required documents are included. This reduces the risk of document fraud and ensures your application meets the university's standards.
Please submit your application to the AAO via the following link: https://u.kyoto-u.jp/graduate-admissions-for-overseas-graduates
STEP 2: Document Verification and Review
Once you submit your application, the AAO will review your file. They will check:
Your educational background (institution accreditation, school duration, degree qualifications).
The authenticity of your academic transcripts and language proficiency certificates (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, JLPT).
Your preferred admission period (October/April) and eligibility.
The AAO will then forward your verified information to the potential supervisor (the professor).
STEP 3: Professor’s Decision and "Letter of Acceptance"
After the AAO completes their check, the professor will review your verified information and decide whether or not to initiate direct communication with you. If the professor decides to proceed with your application, they will contact you directly (usually via email). At this stage, the professor can issue a "Letter of Acceptance" (or a provisional acceptance letter), which you will need to submit for the formal graduate school application and entrance examinations.
Important Notes for Applicants
To avoid delays or confusion, please do not contact the professor directly unless the AAO process has been completed. The professor will only be able to review your information after it has been verified and forwarded by the AAO.
If you have already contacted the professor via personal email, your email may be forwarded to the AAO, and you will be guided to follow the official process.
The AAO also assists with admission reminders, interview schedule arrangements (if requested by the professor), and scholarship information notices.
